Lone Wolf and I had been planning the day all week and by the time Friday came we were both so anxious for Saturday. We both got a haircut on Friday, and I decided to go with something entirely new and I love it! So that was a great start to our weekend. Saturday morning we got up extra early, had a hot bowl of blueberry oatmeal then hurried everyone out the door and into the car. We dropped Little Inventor over at his grandparent's and took Grandma over to her sister's and by 9:40AM we were on our way to Lancaster. And an entire day completely by ourselves to do whatever the hell we wanted to do!
And get this...when we dropped off Grandma, it was just starting to flurry our first snow! So gorgeous :D
So anyhow, we drove through E-town and Mount Joy then got on the highway and headed through Lancaster over to Bird In Hand (yes, that's a real town lol). Our first stop was at the farmer's market, where we picked up two Christmas presents and a container of pontefract cakes. That place was craziness so we picked up a cup of hot spiced cider and headed out again. Next we went over to our favorite store in the area. Kauffman's Fruit Farm and Market. We picked up two jugs of their apple cider (best cider in the world) and some of their apple butter, some maple apple sausage links (okay my mouth is watering all over again lol) and some various holiday candies. Then we went lunch and split an order of chicken pot pie (if you haven't had PA Dutch pot pie, you haven't lived) which came with fresh rolls from the Bird In Hand Bakery (more on that in a minute lol). We checked out their gift shop then went over to the Mount Hope Winery and picked up a few bottles of their Holiday Wine (a tradition in our house, it's great hot and mulled). Ahh, on to Immergut's Pretzels in Intercourse (again, yes, a real town lol) for hot buttery pretzels. Am I making anyone hungry yet?
Then it was back to Kauffman's for a few things from the deli and another cup of hot cider.
And then, Bird In Hand bakery. Oh my freaking gods! Lone Wolf got a hot apple dumpling from them and I got a pecan sticky bun. Cinnabun has met it's match. We also took home a shoofly pie and a little container of rocky road fudge.
Now this may sound like we were just going from one eating place to another, but this was really over about 6 hours with a lot of walking, wandering and driving in between lol
We headed into Lancaster then and found the visitor's center, then Demuth's Tobacco Shop (oldest tobacco shop in the country) where Lone Wolf picked up some new pipe tobacco. The guy there was so nice! He was actually closing up early and we got there about a half hour before closing and he let us come in and browse around. By this time the snow was really coming down and the sun was gone. It was so beautiful! And my feet were soaked lol
After we finished up there, we headed back to E-town to do some actual Christmas shopping, stopping off at the K-mart, then headed back to Harrisburg to hit the Target for a few other things. We left there at about 8:30 then headed for the store back in Middletown. We picked up a few movies, popped in the dollar store, grabbed our groceries and then stopped in New China for some take out. By the time we left the store it was 9:30 and we'd been going and going for 12 hours. We got home, put away the groceries, popped in our movie and sat down for a VERY late dinner, then sat up for an hour before I finally zonked out.
Now, the snow was gorgeous and the lights on the way home were so pretty. The food was amazing and the shopping was fun. The traffic wasn't bad because of the weather and all of the cashiers we talked to were wonderfully sweet. The conversation was stimulating and I don't think I've laughed so much in a very long time. But you want to know what made yesterday the most awesome day ever?
Spending every moment of it with my very best friend.
